Research Project: ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF TEPHRITID FRUIT FLY ERADICATION AND CONTROL

Location: Tropical Plant Pests Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report documents research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 5320-22430-021-00D "Detection, Control and Area Wide Management of Fruit Flies."

Adsorption and analysis of the new insecticides thiamethoxam and indoxacarb in the Hawaiian soils:

Thiamethoxam and indoxacarb are two new insecticides potentially useful for fruit fly control. A method was developed for the simultaneous extraction and analysis of indoxacarb and thiamethoxam from five series of Hawaiian soils, which are Helemano, Wahiawa, Kauai, Nohili, and Lualualei soils. Using pressurized fluid extraction followed by liquid chromatography, the average recoveries of the added amount from the five soils ranged from 80% ± 5 to 101% ± 10 for thiamethoxam, and 83% ± 6 to 106% ± 7 for indoxacarb. Soil incubation (aging) studies showed strong binding of indoxacarb to all soils tested after 30 days, while thiamethoxam remained quite available for extraction during the length of the study (90 days). The organic carbon adsorption constant (Koc) of thiamethoxam was 0.53 in Lihue soil and 0.23 in Wahiawa soil.
