1/10/06  -   EPA Proposes New Methods to Determine Fuel Economy Estimates

EPA is proposing to revise the methods used to determine the City and Highway estimates that appear on the window stickers of new cars and trucks, in the Fuel Economy Guide and in the Green Vehicle Guide. The city and highway miles per gallon (MPG) estimates help consumers compare the fuel economy of different vehicles. Although no single test can ever account for the wide variety of driving conditions and styles, EPAs proposal will bring the MPG estimates closer to the fuel economy consumers actually achieve on the road. The new MPG estimates will take effect with model year 2008 vehicles, which will be available in dealer showrooms in the fall of 2007. More information about the proposal can be found at http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy.

Now it's easier than ever to identify the greenest vehicles. The SmartWay logo has been added to identify those vehicles with the best Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gas Scores. SmartWay Elite indicates the best of the best. Click here to learn more.

The Green Vehicle Guide is maintained by EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ).
