June 7, 2007

Dear Docket Clerk:

The following is a summary of actions taken by the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District’s (AC Transit’s) Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) at the Committee’s May 8, 2007 meeting. The AAC comments are regarding the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) proposed revisions to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines for Transportation Vehicles (36 CFR, part 1192, subparts A and B).

Docket 2007-1
RIN 3014-AA38
Office of Technical and Informational Services
Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board
1331 F Street, NW, Suite 1000
Washington, DC 20004-111

Proposal: Increase the design load of lifts/ramps from 600 lbs. to 660 lbs.

Comment: The AAC supports the increase of the design load of lifts/ramps from 600 lbs. to 660 lbs. assuming that adequate time will be given to the manufacturers and that the increase in design load would only be applied to newly purchased vehicles.

Proposal: Increase the clear wheelchair securement surface area from 30” x 48” to 30” x 60”.

Comment: The AAC requests that the Access Board look at the positive and negative impacts of lengthening the clear wheelchair securement surface area. Additionally, the AAC recommends a clear surface area of 30” x 54”.

These comments are submitted to the Docket Clerk without the endorsement of the AC Transit Board of Directors or staff.

Thank you for your consideration of the AAC comments.

Sincerely,

Kim Huffman
Secretary to the Committee
