Research Project:
EVALUATION OF CARBON SEQUESTRATION POTENTIAL OF PRAIRIE POTHOLE WETLANDS
Location: Morris, Minnesota
2005 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a reimbursable agreement between ARS and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Geological Survey. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 3645-12000-004-00D, "Land Management Practices to Enhance the Physical, Chemical and Biological Traits of Cold, Wet Soils." USGS supported the agreement where USDA-ARS-NCSCRL would provide the analytical chemistry work on 2800 wetland soil samples and 1350 biomass samples. The results are due to them by 9/30/05 and the work is on schedule to be completed by that date. In performing these analyses, the Lab and ARS gained new insights into the importance of wetlands as a Carbon sink, and gained new experiences in managing large samples and in conducting new chemical analysis procedures. The high level of accuracy and the timely analysis within the budget limits provided by USGS add to the reputation of this Lab as a reliable analytical lab and to ARS as an agency providing reliable answers to applied problems of national importance.
