Research Project: INTEGRATED BMP'S FOR COTTON PRODUCTION TO MEET TMDL STANDARDS FOR WATER QUALITY

Location: Southern Weed Science Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES), Stoneville, MS. Additional information concerning this and related research can be found in the report of the inhouse research project 6402-12220-003-00D, Maintaining Soil Resources for Effective Conservation and Herbicide Management in Mid-South Crop Production. The research associated with this agreement is also done in collaboration with National Sedimentation Laboratory, Water Quality and Ecology Research Unit (WQERU), Oxford, MS, research project 6408-13660-004-00D. The experimental area was surveyed and graded in 2003. Experimental design was established in 2004 and plots received appropriate agronomic management. Berms separating plots were constructed and drainage pipes were installed in 2004. MAFES is responsible for the agronomic management of these plots, while WQERU and SWSRU personnel are responsible for collection of ecological and environmental monitoring data. Instrumentation was completed from 2004 to 2005. Edge of field practices were finished in 2005 (grass buffers, stiff grass hedges). Soil was sampled for herbicide dissipation in 2005 and 2006, and some runoff measurements were taken in 2004-2006. Once runoff sampling is in full operation, samples will be split for nutrient and herbicide analysis, as well as sediment concentration versus turbidity calibration. Yield and management data will be collected beginning in 2006.
