Citation: Steiner, J.J., Minoura, T., Xiong, W. 2005. Weatherinfo: a web-based weather data capture system. Agronomy Journal. v.97. p.633-639.

Interpretive Summary: The WeatherInfo system Web tool was developed to help scientists and agricultural consultants automatically retrieve weather data over the Internet to support simulation models and management decision assistance tools. To make data retrieval easy, WeatherInfo was developed with a database that stores weather data extracted from the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) website. The database is automatically updated daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on the data frequency requirement.

Technical Abstract: Past and current weather data are needed for many agriculture and natural resource management applications. With the rapid development and popularity of Web technology solutions, the Internet has become a major means for collecting information. The WeatherInfo system was developed as a framework platform to provide end users a way to automatically retrieve weather data over the Internet to support simulation models. To make data retrieval and manipulation easy by users, WeatherInfo was implemented with a relational database to store weather data extracted from the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) website. The database is automatically updated daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on the data frequency requirement. The system also includes a Web service implemented in ASP.NET to support data exchange by clients needing weather data. Clients can retrieve weather data in graphic or table form. This framework system demonstrates data available over the Web for 122 locations in California from 1 January 2003 to the present.
