Statement of Secretary Gutierrez, Co-Chair of the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba

Washington (Feb. 19)—Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez, the Co-Chair of the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, issued the following statement on the news that Fidel Castro had resigned as president of Cuba: “Fidel Castro’s legacy has been one of hate, violence, repression of the Cuban people, and countless human rights violations. For the man who created a Caribbean gulag, history’s verdict will be as severe as his rule.
