Research Project: INCREASED PROFITS FOR SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED GARLIC
2007 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Correlate the yield and qualities of 10 distinct garlic cultivars with growth environment, inputs, quality, and chemical composition data.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
We will compare yield, quality, and uniformity of 10 genetically unique garlic types grown in replicated plots at 11 farms across the US. We will identify plasticity of numerous phenotypic traits and determine how growth environment affects medium-term storage characteristics of garlic bulbs.

3.Progress Report
This report serves to document research conducted under a reimbursable agreement between ARS and the Northeast Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 5402-21000-011-00D titled Plant Germplasm Preservation Research. Data collection was completed for the first year in which 11 small organic farms grew the same genetically diverse 10 garlic varieties during the 2005-2006 season. Data collection is underway for the second year of the project in which 12 small organic farms replanted garlic from the previous year and grew it during the 2006-2007 season. When data collection is complete for the second year of the project, we will determine the genetic x environment interactions on many garlic descriptor types. We plan to identify ways to describe garlic types regardless of growth location. Growers will also learn the different growth habits of diverse garlic types. ADODR monitoring activities to evaluate progress was performed via e-mail exchanges and conference calls with the cooperator.
