Research Project: GENETIC ANALYSIS OF FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT RESISTANCE GENES IN WHEAT

Location: Wheat Genetics, Quality Physiology and Disease Research

2004 Annual Report

4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
This report serves to document research conducted under a trust agreement between ARS and the North American Millers Association. Additional details may be found in the report of the parent project 5325-21000-019-00D. The objectives are in support of the long-term goal of 5348-21000-019-00D, Identification and Deployment of Genes to Reduce Production Risks and Improve Quality in Club and Soft White Winter Wheat. In the past we have developed ressitance gene analog polymorphism (RGAP) molecular markers which are derived from cloned disease resistance genes. We are using these to map genes for resistance to Fusarium Head Blight in a spring wheat population derived from ND2603 X Butte86. ND2603 carries resistance from the Chinese landrace, Sumai3. We have screened several RGAP markers on the two parents for the populations and have detected differences in banding patterns. Our next step will be to type these markers on the progeny of the population. This population has also been assessed for end use quality so our goal is two-fold: to develop additional markers for scab resistance as well as additional markers for end use quality. This project will be terminated. No funds were provided to continue the research.
