View is south toward a spatter cone about 200 m south of Pu`u `O`o. Late on the afternoon of September 23,
1999, lava was bubbling beneath
old pahoehoe flows. By the next morning, this spatter cone had formed on the
site and remained active for the next 2-3 days. The cone grew to a
height of 9 m, with a base of 20 m by 40 m.
