Research Project: GENETIC IMPROVEMENT IN WEST AFRICAN COCOA (THEOBROMA CACAO) Project Number: 0210-22310-002-91
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 12, 2006
End Date: Dec 31, 2008

Objective:
Improved cocoa production in West African using genetic approaches to identify disease resistance and to assure germplasm collections in West Africa.

Approach:
In cooperation with U.S., West African Cacao Research Institutions and international partners, such as IPGRI, CIRAD, CABI Biosciences and the University of Reading, utilize biotechnological methods to improve cocoa (Theobroma cacao) production and quality for the benefit of Sub-Saharan African producers and the global industry and consumers, and conduct or ensure the conduct research that supports the implementation of said research. Coordinate activities with the Sustainable Tree Crops Program such that the line of delivery between research, technology transfer, and delivery of technologies to end users is clear. Underlying biochemical mechanisms which govern identified traits will be investigated. The gained information will be utilized to produce higher yielding and enhanced quality crops appropriate for Sub-Saharan Africa agricultural and food production systems. Studies that support the use appropriate use of new cultivars will also be conducted.
