Center: University of Washington
Center Director: Faustman, Elaine
Title: Pesticide Exposure Pathways Research Project
Investigators: Faustman, Elaine
Institution: University of Washington
EPA Project Officer: Fields, Nigel
Project Period: August 1, 1998 through December 31, 2003
Project Amount: Refer to main center abstract for funding details.
RFA: Centers for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research (1998)
Research Category: Health Effects , Children's Health
Description:
Objective:In this project, the role of age dependent differences in paraoxonase metabolism of organophosphate and metabolic polymorphisms on organophosphate toxicity will be evaluated. Thus, both age and genetic polymorphism will be evaluated in the context of potential factors impacting the susceptibility of children to organophosphate neurodevelopmental toxicity. Research from this project will provide the basis for child specific pharmacokinetic models that the Exposure Assessment Facility Core will develop for organophosphate pesticides. This project, like the other laboratory based project, will provide an improved scientific basis for our risk assessments for children.
Field-Based Studies
The two field based studies address a second key risk assessment issue for children, that of understanding the pathways and amounts of pesticides to which children are exposed.
