EPA Marks Beginning of Broad Clean Vehicle Program

On January 26, 2004, EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt joined with leaders from the auto and oil industries to acknowledge the start of the major Tier 2 Vehicle and Gasoline Sulfur Program. Since EPA issued this historic final rule in 2000 after close collaboration with a range of stakeholders, these industries have been investing in the technological improvements that are now seen in a large segment of the passenger vehicle fleet and in gasoline nationwide. To illustrate the success of the program in moving very clean vehicles into the mainstream of the nation's vehicle fleet, manufacturers displayed a wide range of cars, SUVs, vans, and trucks at the event.
