Mandate UNMOGIP was created to assist in the implementation of the cease-fire agreement of January 1, 1949, between India and Pakistan. The mission observes, reports, and investigates, to the extent possible, complaints from the parties on violations of the cease-fire. U.S. Interests UNMOGIP helps to prevent an escalation of tension and violence into a war between countries with nuclear potential. The U.S. has consistently encouraged India and Pakistan to resolve their disagreements bilaterally. For now, however, the unacceptably high risk and potential consequences of a resumption of hostilities over the Kashmir issue continue to warrant U.S. support for this mission. |
