What we've been working on:
- Maryland Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership Launched -- October 24, 2008 marked the inception of the Maryland chapter of the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership (CWRP) . A total of six environmental restoration projects are planned, including North Point State park, the shoreline of the Nanticoke River and Isle of Wight Wildlife Management Area. The CWRP is an innovative private-public initiative aimed at preserving, restoring, and protecting aquatic habitats. Since its inception in 1999, the CWRP has preserved, restored, enhanced and protected more than 20,000 acres of wetlands and 7,000 stream miles.
- What's Causing the Conductivity Levels to Increase in the Monongahela River? -- On October 22, 2008, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) requested that the Freshwater Biology Team assist in the assessment of nearly 70 river miles of the Monongahela River and its tributaries. The objective of the assessment was to document the current water quality conditions of the Monongahela River and its tributaries as related to the observed increase in Total Disssolved Solids (TDS) and conductivity. Two tributaries, Dunkard Creek and Jacobs Creek, appear to be causing part of the problem with values over 2000 uS/cm while the mainstem of the river near the West Virginia border was 631 uS/cm.
