Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao meets with her Mexican and Canadian counterparts in Ottawa, Canada where the three NAFTA trading partners reaffirmed their commitment to the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC) as an important tool for protecting basic worker rights. The NAALC is the first agreement to link labor rights and standards to an international trade agreement highlighting cooperation on labor matters, the promotion of eleven principles in three key areas of labor law (industrial relations, occupational health and safety, and employment standards) and the effective enforcement of domestic labor law in the three NAFTA countries.
