a Any unmet needs is a composite of 14 pairs of questions asked. For each of 14 specific health care services, respondents were asked: During the past 12 months / since (his/her birth) [if younger than 12 months], was there any time when (sample child) needed (specific health care service)? Did (sample child) receive all the (specific health care service) that (he/she) needed? The 14 specific health care services were: routine preventative care, such as a physical examination or well child check-up; care from a specialty doctor; dental care including check-ups; prescription medications; physical, occupational or speech therapy; mental health care or counseling; substance abuse treatment or counseling; home health care; eyeglasses or vision care; hearing aids or hearing care; mobility aids or devices, such as canes, crutches, wheelchairs, or scooters; communication aids or devices, such as communication boards; medical supplies; other medical equipment. If any of these 14 were needed, but not received, then the variable was coded as any unmet need.
bPoor refers to incomes below the Federal poverty line; near poor, over the poverty line to just below 200 percent of the poverty line; middle, 200 percent to just below 400 percent of the poverty line; and high, 400 percent of the poverty line and over.
