The Sector Facility Indexing Project focused on compiling information on facilities within five industry
categories (automobile assembly, pulp manufacturing, petroleum refining, iron and steel production, and the primary
smelting and refining of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc (nonferrous metals), and selected major federal facilities).
SFIP contained records for 591 facilities from the five industry sectors, as well as 273 federal facilities.
SFIP information related to compliance and inspection history, chemical releases and spills, and demographics of the
surrounding population.
The Sector Facility Indexing project was retired in December of 2004. Most of the information found in SFIP
can now be obtained in EPA's Enforcement Compliance History Online (ECHO). The ECHO Sector Facility
Indexing Universe field provides compliance and inspection history and demographics information for the five SFIP industry sectors. Detailed information
regarding spills can now be obtained from the
National Response Center. Chemical release information can be obtained from EPA's TRI Explorer. SFIP data on facility-level
production/capacity will no longer be updated. Users can consult more recent versions of the production/capacity data sources listed in the
SFIP data archive.
