About the Deputy Director: Bettye B. Samuels

Bettye B. Samuels serves as Deputy Director of the Office of the 21st Century Workforce at the United States Department of Labor, continuing a career of public service that has spanned from the classroom to the state of Kentucky to the federal government.

Ms. Samuels' work at the Labor Department gives her a key role in the implementation of the President's Initiative on the 21st Century Workforce, realizing the vision of President George W. Bush and Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao of a prepared workforce, a quality workplace, a secure workforce and a competitive workforce that meets the needs of both workers and their employers.

Important accomplishments of the Office of the 21st Century Workforce during Ms. Samuels's tenure include leadership roles in three high-profile Women's Entrepreneurship Summits and the 2004 Asian Pacific American Federal Career Advancement Summit. These and many other federal conferences have benefited from her organizational expertise and strategic planning.

She was appointed by President Bush to the Labor Department as a Senior Intergovernmental Affairs Officer in the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs in 2001. In this position she served as a liaison between Secretary Chao and the governors and state and locally elected officials of several southern states.

Prior to joining the Bush Administration, she served her home state of Kentucky as Director of Scholar Affairs for the Governor's Scholars Program from 1999 to 2001. This work grew naturally from her career as a teacher and school guidance counselor.

Ms. Samuels has taught French at the University of Louisville and at Ballard High School in Louisville, Kentucky and Herndon High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. As Department Chairperson of Ballard High School's foreign language department, Ms. Samuels organized and sponsored over 30 student exchange and study/travel programs to Europe and Africa.

Bettye Samuels holds a Master of Science degree from Purdue University and a Bachelor of Arts in French and Humanities from the University of Louisville. When not working in Washington, she and her husband Jim continue to call Kentucky home.
