U.S. Department of Labor to host compliance seminar in Biloxi, Miss., on November 13 for advocacy organizations and agencies

Wage and Hour Division offering information on the Fair Labor Standards Act

ATLANTA -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division has announced an upcoming informational seminar for worker advocacy organizations and state and local agencies. The seminar will cover the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and other labor standards laws that may apply to workers in the Gulf Coast region. Advocacy organizations and other governmental agencies interact directly with employees and often provide the initial response to workers with compliance questions.

“This seminar is an opportunity for these groups to learn about the FLSA and other applicable labor laws so they can make the proper referrals to the Wage and Hour Division,” said Connie Klipsch, regional administrator for the Wage and Hour Division’s Southeast Region.

Topics to be covered at the Biloxi meeting include minimum wage, overtime, recordkeeping and youth employment provisions of the FLSA. Attendees also will learn about the prevailing wage and fringe benefit requirements of some federally funded contracts.

Discussions will be held on issues such as determining whether an individual is an independent contractor or an employee under federal labor statutes, identifying joint employment situations where two or more employers are responsible for compliance, and establishing when the FLSA applies to employment situations.

There is no fee to attend this seminar.
