"Sweatshops have no place in a modern America, and the Department of
Labor is determined to redouble our efforts to end abusive practices. Now is
the time for all of us to roll up our sleeves and join in the important task of
finding solutions to the garment industry ills. We believe creating
partnerships along with strong enforcement will make a difference. The Apparel
Industry Partnership, a group of industry leaders, human rights activists and
union leaders convened by President Clinton to find strategies to end
sweatshops, is one partnership that is actively working to improve worker
conditions.
"In a global economy, we can't close our eyes to exploitative labor
conditions wherever they may exist. That is why this Administration has sought
to build a partnership that addresses working conditions in the apparel
industry not just in the United States, but around the world. And we are
actively asking our trade partners to support new solutions to the age-old
problem of abusive working conditions, solutions such as codes of conduct and
other partnership approaches."
