Jose L. Medina Named Top Federal Wage Law Enforcement Official for Wisconsin, Minnesota

CHICAGO --

Jose L. Medina, a career federal official, has been named district director of the U.S. Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division office in Minneapolis, with responsibility for directing enforcement of the nation’s federal minimum wage, overtime pay and Davis-Bacon regulations among many others in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Medina, who recently received his MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio, began his career with the Wage and Hour Division in West Covina, Calif., and served as assistant district director in San Antonio from 2003 prior to his appointment in Minneapolis. Among many highlights and outstanding efforts in his career, Medina served as the Labor Department’s liaison in San Antonio with the Texas Human Trafficking Taskforce, where he played an important role in developing partnerships with federal, state and local agencies.

“During his tenure with the Wage and Hour Division, he has earned the confidence and respect of his peers for his service in leadership positions,” said Acting Midwest Regional Administrator Shirley Gardner, who announced the appointment.

“I’ve always found great reward in helping people,” Medina said of his appointment. “In this position, I have the opportunity to help low wage workers in particular, seeing to it that they receive the pay their work and federal law entitles them to. I find that prospect the most appealing part of my new position.”

Among his responsibilities, Medina will oversee enforcement of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which requires covered employees to be paid the minimum wage for all hours worked and time and one-half the regular rate of pay for hours worked more than 40 in a week. The FLSA also contains recordkeeping requirements and youth employment standards.

For more information about the FLSA, call the Department of Labor’s toll-free help line at 1-866-4USWAGE (1-866-487-9243). Information is also available on the Internet at www.wagehour.dol.gov. Information on the regulations governing exemptions – including an on-line tool for determining overtime eligibility – is available at www.dol.gov/fairpay.
