U.S. Labor Department Recovers $305,620 in Back Wages from Northfield, Minn., Postal Contractor

MINNEAPOLIS --

The U.S. Labor Department today announced that Taylor Truck Line Inc. has paid $305,620 in back wages and fringe benefits to 42 truck drivers who delivered mail in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area under three federal contracts with the U.S. Postal Service.

"The Department of Labor is committed to ensuring that workers are paid all prevailing wages and fringe benefits to which they are entitled under federal contract labor standards laws," said Denise Scharlemann, district director of the Wage and Hour Division in Minneapolis.

The department’s Wage and Hour Division investigated Taylor Truck Line, based in Northfield, Minn., under the federal McNamara-O’Hara Service Contract Act (SCA). The investigation disclosed that the company failed to pay prevailing wages, health and welfare benefits, holidays and vacation pay to truck drivers. The violations occurred during the period August 2003 through August 2005.

The SCA covers contracts entered into by federal agencies where the principal purpose of the contract is to furnish services in the United States through the use of service employees. It requires that every federal service contract in excess of $2,500 contain a wage determination reflecting locally prevailing wages and fringe benefits, as determined by the Department of Labor.

Taylor Truck Line cooperated fully during the investigation. After the Wage and Hour Division explained the prevailing wage and fringe benefits requirements of the SCA, the company immediately changed its payroll policies to ensure that all workers are paid properly. The company also agreed to comply with the law in the future.
