Federal and State Labor Law Agencies to Provide Symposium for Mexican, Latin American Consulates in Chicago

CHICAGO --

This Wednesday, April 6, in Chicago, federal and state agencies will provide a broad overview of the laws they enforce or administer to protect workers. The symposium, presented to consular staff members from several Latin American consulates will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Mexican Consulate of Chicago, 200 S. Ashland.

The symposium is an outgrowth of the Chicago Area Workers’ Rights Initiative (CAWRI), a coalition of state and federal law enforcement agencies and local community, labor and faith-based organizations dedicated to assisting low-wage and immigrant workers in the Chicago area. Participating in the symposium are: the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; the National Labor Relations Board; the Illinois Department of Labor, and the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission. Consulates of Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica will likely attend.

Members of the Latin American consulates requested the symposium to better acquaint them with U.S. and state labor laws. Information provided at the meeting will help consular staff advise their constituents on work-related situations and refer constituents seeking government assistance to the correct agency. Space for the symposium is being provided by the Mexican Consulate.

NOTE TO ASSIGNMENT DESKS/EDITORS: Media representatives are invited to cover the event.
