U.S. Labor Department Recovers $26,822 in Back Wages for Federal Contract Workers in Dayton, Ohio

DAYTON, Ohio --

The U.S. Labor Department today announced that A.H. Sturgill Roofing Inc. has paid $26,822 in back wages for violations of the Davis-Bacon Act. The backpay went to 42 roofers and sheet metal workers who worked on a federal construction contract at the Marine Corps Reserve Center in Dayton.

"The Department of Labor is committed to ensuring that workers are paid all prevailing wages and fringe benefits to which they are entitled under federal labor standards statutes," said George Victory, district director of the Wage and Hour Division in Columbus.

The investigation conducted by the department’s Wage and Hour Division disclosed that the company failed to pay prevailing health and welfare benefits to roofers and sheet metal workers. The violations occurred from July through November 2005. A.H. Sturgill Roofing was a subcontractor on a federal contract with the U.S. Navy.

The Davis Bacon Act requires that every federal contract for the construction, alteration or repair of public buildings or public works in excess of $2,000 contain a clause setting forth the prevailing wages and fringe benefits to be paid to laborers and mechanics employed under the contract. Contractors and subcontractors are required to pay workers locally prevailing wages and fringe benefits, as determined by the Department of Labor.

A.H. Sturgill Roofing, headquartered at 4358 Springfield Street, Dayton, is engaged in commercial and industrial roofing.
