Controlling Underground Injection of Wastewater (an EPA Drinking Water Academy module) A big part of watershed management involves protecting ground water and drinking water; within EPA the Drinking Water Academy specializes in web-based and live training about groundwater and drinking water issues. Their training provides information to help EPA, States, Tribes, and others increase their capability to implement the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments, which will, in turn, promote better compliance and greater public health protection. Underground Injection Control (UIC) is one of the major programs administered by EPA's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water. This module, Controlling Underground Injection of Wastewater (PDF format, 2.1MB, 65 pages), provides training fundamentals that were identified by the Drinking Water Academy Working Group. The module explains the UIC program framework, reviews basic geology and how injection wells work, and identifies significant challenges we face in wastewater injection control. |
