Section B: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

2005

UL ISO 14001:2004 Standard Surveillance Assessment

The audit covered all shifts for production processes relating to mixing, prep, tire building and inspection of tires and the associated support and management processes for maintenance, calibration, audits, resources, data analysis, and management responsibility.

  June  2005

2005

The audit covered all clauses of the ISO 14001:1996 Standard. The audit covered all activities and all shifts.

  March  2005

None conducted in last three years

A minor corrective action was issued during our UL Assessment Audit concerning the container and method of carrying a sample of product from our mixing area to the Lab. A container with lid was located and a better method of labeling the container was put in place. Procedures in both areas were reviewed, updated, and communicated to relevant parties. The corrective action was considered to be effective.

A minor corrective action was issued during our UL Assessment Audit concerning a non-hazardous materials spill and cleanup in two separate areas of the Plant. In one area a waste drum was moved to another location, environmental instruction was modified to include visual aids to better define the required reaction to small spills. In the other area, the waste handling documentation was modified to require the use of a spill containment pan in the area of the spill. The unit's cleaning procedure was expanded to include routine steam cleaning, removal of totes from rack to adequately clean it. The corrective action was considered to be effective.

SECTION C: ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS

C.1 COMMITMENT 1

BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing-Tuscaloosa, AL's first commitment is to reduce the facility's VOC emissions.

Normalized performance has improved only slightly. At this time we have engaged an engineering firm to do a study on a capture and recovery unit that would burn these emissions in our boilers. We expect this study and implementation, if feasible, to be completed the end of 2006.

C.2 COMMITMENT 2

BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing-Tuscaloosa, AL's second commitment is to increase the facility's land and habitat conservation.

In 2002 our facility planted more than 600 pine seedlings on our Plant site. In 2005 we disked between the rows of these trees to enhance bird habitat. A Land Stewardship Biologist from the Alabama Wildlife Federation visited our facility, suggesting programs to encourage the wildlife habitat at our facility.

The design of our new west parking lot has enhanced the visual aesthetics of the Plant. This was accomplished by planting ornamentals and increasing the grassy area in front of the Plant. This design also improve our drainage, water runoff.

Bird houses and duck boxes have been purchased and will be put in place by the end of April, 2006.

We also have plans to plant Leland Cypress in the NW Perimeter Corner of our facility by the end of June, 2006.

Our current land and habitat conservation consist of the following:
approximately 5 acres in wetlands
approximately 5 acres with birdhouses
approximately 5 acres for quail habitat
approximately 10 acres in pine/hardwood saplings

C.3 COMMITMENT 3

BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing-Tuscaloosa, AL's third commitment is to reduce the facility's total (non-transportation) energy use.

Energy useage and cost are a priority not only at our Plant level but also at our Corporate level. An Energy Committee has been active at the Plant level since October 2005. Areas that are being targeted are air leaks, steam shutdown in selected areas, "weekend air" only for shutdowns and turning off all "users", lights, fans, heaters, etc., of electrical power during shutdowns and in offices/work areas not being used.

C.4 COMMITMENT 4

BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing-Tuscaloosa, AL's fourth commitment is to reduce the generation of, and improve the management of, the facility's non-hazardous waste.

By the end of 2005 progress was made toward reducing our non-hazardous waste. We are now showing significant reduction in our non-hazardous waste in the beginning of 2006.

Note that the 2003 baseline data was changed. Landfill data changed from 1559 tons to 2411 tons. Reused/recycled off site data was changed from 6236 tons to 5230 tons. The changes corrected a clerical error made in a past report.

As a result of production increases our total non-hazardous waste increased. Based on this result, several cross-functional teams have been established to analyze and provide action plans to reduce non-hazardous waste in 2006. In addition, emphasis has been placed on employee training/retraining.

Some examples of our activities are Pareto analysis of our waste streams to help identify areas of need. One of our cross functional teams is evaluating recycling opportunities of our waste streams. A Managing Daily Performance program has been put in place in various sectors of our Plant to communicate daily performance of the area to include costs and quality performance.
