In addition to EPA's facilities at Federal Triangle and 1310 L Street in Washington, DC, and the Potomac Yard Offices in Arlington, Virginia, EPA Headquarters occupies space in eight buildings throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area:

Environmental Features

Green Power

On December 20, 2005, EPA agreed to a three-year green power contract (procured by the Defense Energy Support Center ) for its 12 other Headquarters facilities. From February 1, 2006, to January 31, 2009, EPA will receive 8.25 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year in the form of renewable energy certificates (RECs). The purchase, which offsets 100 percent of the facilities’ annual electricity consumption, supports the generation of renewable energy at wind farms in Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

Between August 2003 and May 2004, EPA successfully instituted a new recycling program at its Headquarters facilities throughout the DC metropolitan area. The goals of the program are to standardize recycling procedures at the numerous Headquarters locations, increase employee participation, and increase the recycling rate. The revised program focuses on mixed office paper, newspaper, cans, plastic and glass bottles, corrugated cardboard, and toner cartridges.

Alternative Transportation

In FY 2006, 84 percent of Headquarters' new fleet acquisitions were alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). Since 2000, EPA has exceeded the requirements of Executive Order 13149, which calls for at least 75 percent of new vehicle acquisitions to be AFVs.
In January 2002, compressed natural gas buses were acquired for Headquarters shuttle bus routes, significantly reducing EPA's use of petroleum and reducing particulate emissions in the Washington, DC, area.
