Although 71 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, most of it is salt water, leaving less than one percent that is usable by humans. Approximately 18 percent of all water consumed (including potential drinking water) is used for industrial processes such as power, cooling, and manufacturing. Recognizing the importance of responsibly managing our water resources, EPA has been incorporating water management activities at its facilities. As of the end of FY 2007, EPA had completed water assessments in all of its 29 reporting laboratories and signed water management plans at the majority of these facilities.
