2004

The audit assessed our conformance with all the elements of the ISO 14001 Standard, and our conformance against J&J's Worldwide Environmental Sustainability Manual. The audit is performed as a self-assessment using J&J's on-line TRAC assessment tool.

  January  2004

2004

All activities that are regulated by local, state and federal government regulations.

  January  2004Internal Environmental Engineers

Milpitas Fire Dept. Inspection, 2004 - no findings
County of Santa Clara, Hazardous Waste Inspection - no findings
County of Santa Clara, Medical Waste Inspection - no findings

Ozone Depleting Substances - Environmental Affairs (EA) is now involved in the management of ODSs and is aware of all user requirements outlined in 40 CFR Part 82. Certified technicians are responsible for complying with the user requirements of the regulations. The ODS Management Program was developed and linked to the EMS.
Hazardous Waste Management - (1) The Hazardous Waste WI 1023134 was revised to include specific criteria for monitoring hazardous waste labels. (2). The same HW WI was revised to ensure that any changes in the regulatory status of a waste stream are checked against the hazardous waste container inventory so that all labeling is immediately changed. (3) A HW inspector rotation schedule was developed such that inspections are performed frequently by a "different set of eyes.".
Contractor Management - A form was developed as part of the EMS to ensure environmental contractors are trained and qualified to perform the work they are being asked to perform. Also, the work is assessed to ensure the tasks are being performed up to our expectations.

C.3 COMMITMENT 3

LifeScan, Inc.'s third commitment is to reduce the facility's procurement of hazardous/toxic components, specifically PVC, DEHP and latex.

We made an effort to remove all latex and PVC from our products and packaging. We believe our packaging is completely free of both latex and PVC. We believe our products are completely free of latex. There may be some PVC in USB cables, and 9-pin serial cables provided to us by a third-party. There may be some PVC in the wiring insulation in our meters.

We made the following changes to our soft meter cases to remove latex, and PVC.

ULTRA CASE (REV D): contains latex/contains PVC 1,121,280
ULTRA CASE (REV E): latex removed/PVC removed 2,700,540

LifeScan, Inc.'s fourth commitment is to reduce the generation of, and improve the management of, the facility's hazardous waste.

Waste increased significantly in the "recycled" category. The reason is California began regulating waste electronics as Universal Waste. Also, we had a number of employees that were laid off during 2004 which resulted in large sections of the facility being completely cleaned out of all left behind materials.

This is our annual event where we emphasize to our employee population J&J's CREDO commitment of preserving the environment and natural resources. Silicon Valley Manufacturer Group's Environmental Committee: LifeScan is actively engaged as a member of this committee. We regularly attend monthly meetings, comment on regulations, provide examples of our best practices, etc. Sustainable Silicon Valley - LifeScan pledged to reduce our green house gas emissions.
