SECTION C: ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS

C.1 COMMITMENT 1

LifeScan, Inc.'s first commitment is to reduce the facility's total GHG emissions.

We completed the following energy projects in 2005:
(1) B4 DHM-1, 2, 3 & 4 Reactivation Exhaust Heat Recovery --
Projected annual energy savings = 44,145 therms
(2) B4 SS Blood Lab AHU --
Projected annual gas savings = 24,292 therms
Projected annual electric savings = 152,891 KWHs
(3) B4 Cooling Towers Replacement --
Projected annual electric savings = 390,881 KWHs
(4) B4 Oxidizer OX-3 Waste Heat Recovery --
Projected annual gas savings = 28,855 therms
SUMMARY
Total Proj. Annual Gas Savings = 44145 + 24292 + 28855 = 97292 therms
Total Proj. Annual Electric Savings = 152891 + 390881 = 543772 KWHs
Total CO2 Reduction = (97292 therms x 11.71) + (543772 KWHs x 0.80447) = 1139289 + 437448 = 1,576,737 lbs. per year

We completed the following energy projects in 2004:
1. Converted Bldg. 4 Air Handler 4 from a 100% outside air system to a return air system.
Completion date: May 2004
Projected annual energy savings: 28,184 KWH
Projected annual gas savings: 7,614 therms
2. Bldg. 4 DHM-1, 3 & 4 Waste Heat Recovery Heat Exchangers:
DHM-1 HX:
Completion date: Oct. 2004
Projected annual energy savings: 21,637 therms
DHM-3 HX:
Completion date: Dec. 2004
Projected annual energy savings: 11,651 therms
DHM-4 HX:
Completion date: Dec. 2004
Projected annual energy savings: 7,621 therms
SUMMARY:
Total projected annual electrical savings: 28,184 KWH
Total projected annual gas savings: 48,523 THERMS
Total projected annual CO2 reduction: (28184 x 0.80447) + (48523 x 11.71) = 22673 + 568204 = 590,877 LBS.

C.2 COMMITMENT 2

LifeScan, Inc.'s second commitment is to reduce the facility's total water use.

LifeScan’s fresh water use went from the baseline year of 2001 (24,550,108 gallons) to 2005 (6,438,784 gallons). This is a 74% reduction. LifeScan reduced consumption through various strategies including the following:
LifeScan began using recycled water for irrigation (three meters transferred in June 2004, one meter transferred in June 2005).
LifeScan also implemented a “C3” irrigation technology that fractionates soil improving plant health. The technology breaks down salts in the soil and results in deeper root growth.
The C3 technology was coupled with the re-configuration of the irrigation system’s coverage to ensure appropriate use in multiple watering zones.
LifeScan installed a new water efficient cooling tower which is estimated to save 500,000 gallons annually.

We converted three of four water irrigation meters from fresh water to recycled water. (Effective: 17JUN04)

C.3 COMMITMENT 3

LifeScan, Inc.'s third commitment is to reduce the facility's procurement of hazardous/toxic components, specifically PVC, DEHP and latex.

We have virtually met our goal as only 4,950 cases out of 6,623,130 sold in 2005 contained PVC. No cases contained latex. Our 2003 goal was: "Our goal is to eliminate PVC, DEHP, and latex from our meter cases. The cases are manufactured by a third-party, and are sold to us as a finished good. However, we write the specifications. We are requiring that the supplier makes our cases from alternative materials, and that they complete analytical testing to document the removal of these compounds."

We made an effort to remove all latex and PVC from our products and packaging. We believe our packaging is completely free of both latex and PVC. We believe our products are completely free of latex. There may be some PVC in USB cables, and 9-pin serial cables provided to us by a third-party. There may be some PVC in the wiring insulation in our meters.

We made the following changes to our soft meter cases to remove latex, and PVC.

ULTRA CASE (REV D): contains latex/contains PVC 1,121,280
ULTRA CASE (REV E): latex removed/PVC removed 2,700,540
Total 3,821,820

UNIVERSAL CASE (REV G): latex removed/PVC removed

We will index this according to the number of soft meter cases purchased.

C.4 COMMITMENT 4

LifeScan, Inc.'s fourth commitment is to reduce the generation of, and improve the management of, the facility's hazardous waste.

Waste descreased significantly as production volumes continued to fall. Also, many clean-out activities occurred the year which removed a lot of hazardous materials from the site.

Waste increased significantly in the "recycled" category. The reason is California began regulating waste electronics as Universal Waste. Also, we had a number of employees that were laid off during 2004 which resulted in large sections of the facility being completely cleaned out of all left behind materials.
