Earthquake Felt Island-Wide


August 14, 1997


An earthquake shook the entire Island of Hawaii at about 3:54 p.m. this afternoon. The earthquake had an preliminary estimated magnitude of 4.5- 4.8 and took place within the south flank of Kilauea, about 4 miles south- west of Pu`u `O`o, at a depth of about 3 miles. The earthquake was felt throughout the island, but there were no reports of damage. An earthquake from the general location occurred early in the morning on June 30 and had a magnitude of 5.3-5.5. Today's earthquake caused no observable change in the ongoing eruption at Pu`u `O`o.
