MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
October 16, 2008
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the CPI-U was virtually
unchanged (0.0 percent) in September following a 0.1 percent
decrease in August. The index for all items less food and
energy increased 0.1 percent in September after increasing
0.2 percent in August.

Total compensation costs for civilian workers increased 0.7 percent, seasonally adjusted, from June to
September 2008, the same as the increase in the previous two quarters. For the year ended September 2008,
compensation costs rose 2.9 percent. The 12-month increase for September 2007 was 3.3 percent.

Nonfarm payroll employment declined by 159,000 in September,
and the unemployment rate held at 6.1 percent. Employment
continued to fall in construction, manufacturing, and retail
trade, while mining and health care continued to add jobs.

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods fell 0.4 percent in September, seasonally
adjusted. This decline followed a 0.9-percent drop in August and a 1.2-percent increase
in July. Prices for finished goods less foods and energy advanced 0.4 percent after rising
0.2 percent a month earlier.

September 04, 2008
Productivity grew 4.3 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the second quarter of
2008, and unit labor costs declined 0.5 percent. In manufacturing, productivity fell 2.2
percent in the second quarter of 2008; unit labor costs rose 6.2 percent. All rates are
seasonally adjusted annual rates.

Real average weekly earnings were unchanged in September 2008. A 0.2 percent increase in average hourly earnings and a 0.1 percent decrease in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) were offset by a 0.3 percent decrease in average weekly hours. Real earnings were down 2.5 percent from a year ago.

The U.S. Import Price Index decreased 3.0 percent in September, following a 2.6
percent decline in August. Falling petroleum prices led the overall decrease, although
nonpetroleum prices also declined. Prices for overall exports decreased 1.0 percent for
the month.
