| Like its predecessor, HVO's newest building sits on Uwekahuna Bluff, the highest part of the rim of Kilauea's caldera in the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Completed in 1986, HVO's new tower permits unobstructed views of Kilauea's summit area, the southeast flank of Mauna Loa, and the distant summit of Mauna Kea. The upper parts of Kilauea's two rift zones can be seen from the tower as well. Since the establishment of HVO in 1912, Kilauea and Mauna Loa have served as natural laboratories for scientists to study volcanic phenomena and develop new monitoring instruments. |
