SECTION C: ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE RESULTS

Goal 1: 3M New Ulm's first goal is to reduce the facility's generation of non-hazardous waste.
The site has implemented Lean Manufacturing processes. Waste reduction has resulted in several departments through this effort.
Additionally, specific projects to improve process yield were successfully completed in 2007 resulting in a significant reduction in the quantity of material that we landfill.

All waste leaving the site is weighed. These weights are the basis of our waste data documentation and analysis.

Total weight of product output.

Goal 2: 3M New Ulm's second goal is to reduce the facility's total (non-transportation) energy use.
-Plant Energy Team performs monthly energy audits
-Replaced 32Watt fluorescent bulbs with 25Watt
-Reduced process compressed air usage by adding master air shut-offs, replaced compressed air vacuum generators with electric blowers, removed compressed air venturi boosters, re-programmed equipment to shut off feed lines when not needed
-Re-programmed feed conveyors to operate only as necessary
-Replaced oversized motors the "right size" as needed
-Improved oven feed system to increase throughput and reduce operation time of oven.
-Added variable frequency drives where applicable
-Replaced incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents where possible
-Replaced equipment with newer energy saving models

The energy usage, in MMBTU's, is taken directly from the local Public Utilities Commission monthly bill that we receive for our electricity and natural gas usage.

Goal 3: 3M New Ulm's third goal is to reduce the facility's VOC emissions.
Reduction in VOC's has been accomplished through site wide efforts to eliminate/minimize use of chemicals that emit VOC's wherever and whenever possible.

Usage of VOC's is tracked by actual usage of all components that emit VOC's as well as through an estimate of emissions from our processes. The process estimates were made by a third part based on actual air sampling.

In the table below, please provide a narrative summary of progress made toward EMS objectives and targets other than those reported as Environmental Performance Goals. You may limit the summary to environmental aspects that are significant and towards which progress has been made during the reporting year.

Do you have additional environmental aspects to report?   No

SECTION D: PUBLIC OUTREACH AND PERFORMANCE REPORTING

The site annually reviews our significant environmental aspects in order to identify potential community environmental concerns. The site sponsors an annual clean-up of shore line and road ditches near the Minnesota River each year. This group of employees is called the River RAT's (River Restoration Action Team.) The site also participates and sponsors the annual clean-up of the community to target dirt that has accumulated near storm sewer grates before spring run-off can carry the high phosphate polluting debris to the nearby Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers. This site's management is proactive in regard to the community and uses the site's databases and resources to resolve concerns before they affect the community.

There were no environmental concerns/incidents to report in 2007.

If there were a concern, our site Environmental Health and Safety Database includes a process for determining root cause for a concern or incident. If there is actually a spill or an incident there is a corporate Environmental Spill (Release) Team that the site calls immediately. The 3M corporate Environmental Operations Group assists in contacting all the appropriate local, state and federal agencies as well as the public. If anyone from the community, or within the plant, has an environmental concern it is entered into the Environmental Health and Safety Database. This can be done by any of the employees on site that have e-mail. This triggers an investigation to resolve the root cause of the concern.

To keep the community apprised of site environmental matters, the site sends an annual press release to the local paper regarding our P-Track participation. Additionally, we have a site website:
