OCIO Key Functions

As required by Federal laws and Departmental policy, the DOL OCIO manages the following 10 Department-wide IT management business functions: 

  • IT Strategic Planning —  fitting the IT vision, mission, and strategic focus areas for DOL into a long-range plan.
  • IT Policies, Directives, and Guidance —  Ensuring consistent IT management.
  • IT Budget Management —  providing guidance, analysis, and cost cutting. 
  • IT Capital Planning and Investment Control (CPIC) —  orchestrating a DOL-wide investment management process.
  • IT Security Management & Privacy —  managing a complete security and privacy program to protect the availability of the Department's computer systems, the integrity of business operations, and the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Information Management —  to limit the amount of information required from the public and to report progress in restricting paperwork to that required by law or other essential need.
  • IT Core Capabilities —  maintaining and enhancing DOL’s core network and computer infrastructure.
  • Work Force Development —  assessing and updating IT skills, supporting IT adaptation for employees with disabilities.
  • IT Investment Management — supporting DOL IT Project Managers in the efficient and effective development, implementation, and operations and maintenance of DOL IT investments by developing IT investment management policies and processes and supporting guides and investment management deliverable templates.
  • Enterprise Architecture Management —  managing the Department-wide enterprise architecture program including the Baseline, Target, and Transition Sequencing Plan as well as implementing and managing an automated Department-wide EA tool and repository.

This functional framework is how the CIO and Deputy CIO executes the mission of the OCIO.
