HOME FURNITURE, FURNISHINGS AND EQUIPMENT STORES (SIC MAJOR GROUP 57)

This major group includes retail stores selling goods used for
furnishing the home such as furniture, floor coverings, draperies,
glass and chinaware, domestic stoves, refrigerators, and other
household electric and gas appliances. Establishments selling
electric and gas appliances are included in this group only if the
major part of their sales consists of articles for home use. These
stores also may perform repair work on household appliances,
radios, televisions, and stereo equipment; but establishments
primarily engaged in repair of these products are classified in SIC
76. Dealers primarily engaged in selling antique and secondhand
furniture are classified in SIC 5932.  Stores furnishing interior
decorating service are classified according to the merchandise
handled. Stores primarily engaged in selling furnishings in
conjunction with an interior decorator service are classified
according to the merchandise handled; if the interior designer
primarily advises clients on selection of merchandise, the
establishment is classified in SIC 7389.
