Interpretations Search Tips
Mar 27, 2008

The Interpretations search tool allows you to perform advanced searches using "AND", "OR", "NEAR", and "NOT". This is case sensitive.  If you use capitol letters, you will narrow your search.  Using all lower case retrieves more search results.

You can also search word patterns using wildcards ("*"; asterisk) and/or exact phrases by enclosing them within quotation marks ("example").  Review the samples and examples below for more information.

simple search (example: flammable liquid label)

Finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases. Flammable liquid label finds documents containing either flammable, liquid, or label. The found documents could contain all words, but not necessarily. The more words found in a document the higher the rank.

OR search (example: flammable OR label)

Finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases. Flammable OR label finds documents containing either flammable or label. The found documents could contain both items, but not necessarily. Similar to the simple search.

AND search (example: flammable AND label)

Finds documents containing all of the specified words or phrases. Flammable AND label finds documents with both the word flammable and the word label.

NOT search (example: flammable NOT label)

Excludes documents containing the specified word or phrase. Flammable NOT label finds documents with flammable but not containing label.

NEAR search (example: flammable NEAR label)

Finds documents containing both specified words or phrases within 10 words of each other. Flammable NEAR label would find documents with flammable and label, if they were within 10 words of each other.

word stem search or wildcard search (example: flam*)

Finds documents that contain any word starting with "flam". Use an asterisk when you're not sure how a word is spelled or to find variations of the word: try flam* to find flame, flaming, flammable. Enter flame* to find singular and plural forms. Use an asterisk at the end or in the middle of words. The search tool ignores an asterisk at the beginning of a word.

exact phrase search (example: "flammable label")

Finds documents that have the two words found right next to each other. "Flammable label" finds documents containing the exact phrase "flammable label". Placing quotation marks around any series of words turns them into a phrase and tells the search tool that you are only interested in documents that have the words in this specific order.

combination search (example: flammable NEAR label NOT liquid)

Finds documents containing flammable with label within 10 words, excluding documents containing liquid. Use combination phrases and word stem searches to broaden or narrow your search.
