Appalachian Student Team Wins Second $75,000 EPA Award

For the second year in a row, a student team from Appalachian State University’s Department of Technology has won a $75,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) P3 Award at EPA’s National Sustainable Design Expo on April 25. In addition, last year’s winner, the Technology Department’s Collaborative Biodiesel Project, presented the results of their funded research.
Appalachian’s student team was honored Wednesday evening at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., for their innovative design for a sustainable tomorrow. Out of a total of 42 teams composed of more than 350 university students and advisors, six teams and 10 honorable mentions were chosen for the creativity and utility of their sustainability designs.
Appalachian’s award is for “The Affordable Bioshelters Project: Testing Technologies for Affordable Bioshelters.” The project will design, build, and test affordable greenhouses that are powered renewably to conserve energy, reduce the demand for fossil fuels and allow more food to be grown locally at lower economic and ecological cost.
Team members include project coordinator Yonatan Strauch, Stony Oswald, Dave Fulton, Joe Smith, Brian Taddonio, Sean Hackett, Caroline House and Andy Bryant. Dr. Brian Raichle, Assistant Professor of Technology, serves as the team’s faculty advisor.
This year marked EPA’s 3rd Annual P3 Awards – People, Prosperity, and the Planet. The other winning teams came from Lehigh University, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Virginia and Western Washington University.
The P3 Award was launched in 2004 to respond to the challenges of the developed and developing world in moving toward sustainability. This national competition enables college students to research, develop and design scientific, technical and policy solutions to sustainability challenges. Their designs will help achieve the mutual goals of economic prosperity while providing a higher quality of life and protecting the planet.
Support for the competition includes 42 partners in the federal government, industry and scientific and professional societies.
