Research Project: ENHANCE THE QUALITY AND CHARACTERIZE GERMPLASM AND CROPS ADAPTED TO ALASKA

Location: Fairbanks, Alaska

Project Number: 5341-21000-004-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 13, 2007
End Date: Aug 31, 2009

Objective:
The overall objective of this project is to enhance the quality and characterize germplasm and crops adapted to Alaska. The specific goals are: 1) introduce to Alaska germplasm from the USDA-ARS breeding programs or repositories, 2) increase seed and test viability of selected germplasm, and 3) conduct plant genetics pathology and entomological research on germplasm or crops adapted to high altitudes or latitudes.

Approach:
Germplasm increases, evaluation and seed germination tests and development of seed testing protocols for subarctic plants will be in consultation with the Curator and the Research Leader of the SARU. Seed will be preserved in refrigerated, dry conditions to delay loss in viability. Research will focus on germination protocols for arctic subarctic germplasm and disease free germplasm. Additional efforts will focus in propagation of grasses, with emphasis on Deschapsia spp. evaluations, and improve methods for disease free propagation and conservation of arctic germplasm.
