Participants are needed to conduct NAAMP calling surveys in many regions.
If you might be interested in volunteering with the NAAMP calling survey,
please contact your Regional Coordinator
for more information.
What is the volunteer experience like?
Volunteers receive training from their Regional Coordinator in how
to identify their local amphibian species by the unique vocalizations
or "frog calls" each species makes. Volunteers are also
given training on the protocols
of the survey (when and how to conduct the survey). Volunteers are
then given, or asked to purchase at cost, the materials necessary
for the survey- such as a thermometer and a training CD or tape of
the frog calls.
Then volunteers are assigned a roadside route where the survey is
conducted several times during the calling season, to catch the early
through late breeding species. Each calling survey route has 10 stops,
at each stop the volunteer listens for 5 minutes to determine what
species are calling. Typically, a route takes a couple hours to complete
and is conducted in the evening, when frogs are most active in their
vocalizations. If you are interested in volunteering with the NAAMP
calling survey, please contact your Regional
Coordinator for more information.
