LOS ALAMOS, N.M., April 6, 2001 -- The Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory will hold a public poster session highlighting its research in biothreat reduction Tuesday at Santa Fe Community College. Scientists will be available to answer questions about their posters and research at the session, scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m.

The session is designed to inform the public about current Bioscience Division research activities, including a proposal to add a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory. A poster display session was held in Los Alamos, and another is planned for April 24 at the EspaƱola Convento.

In addition to biothreat reduction, other posters will describe research currently being conducted at Los Alamos to develop new methods for identifying bacteria from complex samples and databases of pathogenic organisms. Posters on the proposed Biosafety Level 3 laboratory and LANL's biosafety program also will be featured.

Los Alamos' Bioscience Division was formed in October 1999 to bring together biologists, chemists, physicists and computer scientists to create and discover frontier science and technology that benefits public health, the environment and national security.

Los Alamos National Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security, is operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, a team composed of Bechtel National, the University of California, The Babcock & Wilcox Company, and Washington Group International for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
