Spring/Summer Internships in Refuge Biology

Gain valuable hands-on natural resource management experience. Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern North Carolina offers intern positions for the Spring and Summer.

These are volunteer positions; however, housing and a $50/week stipend will be provided. Housing consists of a fully equipped house trailer located at a county campground next to the Cashie River in Windsor. Each intern will be covered under the Worker's Compensation Act for work related accidents/illnesses. Personal transportation is strongly recommended. We provide training and experience, allowing you to participate in the following ways:

 

Biological:

  • Conduct point count bird surveys (Spring and Summer)

  • Conduct fish surveys on the river's floodplain (Spring only)

  • Participate with bird banding activities (Summer only)

  • Assist with the collection of water quality data (Spring and Summer)

  • Monitor wood duck production (Spring and Summer)

  • Establish permanent forest plots in bottomland hardwoods (Spring and Summer)
  •  

    Maintenance:

  • Assist staff in posting refuge lands (Spring and Summer)

  • Conduct routine maintenance tasks involving equipment and facilities (Spring and Summer)
  •  

    Miscellaneous:

  • Catalog refuge slide collection (inclement days Spring or Summer)

  • Computer data entry (inclement days Spring or Summer)
  •  


    Two 12 week intern sessions are being offered Spring (beginning early April) and Summer (beginning mid June). Starting and ending dates for the Spring and Summer sessions are negotiable. To qualify, applicants should be majoring in a field related to natural resources such as wildlife management, forestry, biology, zoology, or environmental studies. Applicants should be willing to do strenuous work outdoors in extreme weather conditions. A valid drivers license is required.

  • Wildlife identification (i.e. birds) and surveys

  • Basic plant taxonomy (bottomland tree and shrub identification)

  • Canoeing / boating orienteering
