Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society

The Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society is a non-profit organization established and incorporated in 1989 by a group of local citizens. The purposes of the Society are twofold: 1) to generate funds to support refuge programs and activities and 2) to assist in the recruitment of Refuge volunteers.

The Society designed, constructed, and staffs the Visitor Center and Gift Shop/Book Store for Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Society is actively fund-raising and conducting outreach to support a number of refuge projects- including the construction of a large Visitor Center and Office Complex on Roanoke Island for Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society has co-sponsored the production of an audio tour tape and CD-ROM.

For only $5.95 (cassette) and $6.95 (CD-ROM), you can purchase this guide to both Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges! (Two refuges on one tape or CD-ROM!). Please order from Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society's secure site (be sure to say in the comments section that you want a tape or a CD, and add $1 per unit to cover shipping/handling) or contact the Visitor Center Manager for more information.

You can help in several ways:

- you can volunteer your time as a Refuge volunteer.
- you can join one of the Coastal Wildlife Society's Friends of the Refuge Work Teams!
- you can join the Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society. The bigger the membership list, the louder the voice of the Society in its efforts to gain support for these refuges.
- you can donate money. Designated donations are accepted with approval of the Refuge Manager; general donations are used to support projects approved by the Refuge Manager in priority order.

In 2004, the Board of Directors and general membership voted to extend memberships to individuals who donated their time volunteering on national wildlife refuges in eastern North Carolina. A single hour of volunteer service annually entitles an individual to a year's membership. Volunteers who have donated 500+ hours of cumulative service are entitled to a lifetime membership. CWRS extends this offer to anyone who volunteers on Alligator River, Currituck, Mackay Island, Pea Island, or Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuges. For more information, contact the Refuge Liaison at 252-473-1131 ext 230. Or, to apply for membership using volunteerism, complete this form.

If you'd like to help Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge through the Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society, you may purchase a membership or make a contribution on-line or you may contact the Society or the Refuge.
