Contact: Todd Hanson, tahanson@lanl.gov, (505) 665-2085

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., March 3, 2000 -- A Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory conference next week will help Northern New Mexico high-tech small businesses apply for technology maturation and commercialization subcontracts. The conference, sponsored by the Industrial Business Development's Technology Commercialization Office, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Los Alamos Inn.

This is the third year the Laboratory has offered subcontracts to small businesses in Northern New Mexico. The Technology Commercialization Office anticipates making from 5 to 15 awards this year, totaling about $200,000. Proposals are due to the Laboratory by March 20, with awards to be made in April. A total of 13 companies have been selected since the inception of the program.

A selected company may use the subcontract to further develop and commercialize the company's own technology, to access Laboratory expertise and services, or both. Although Los Alamos-developed technology is not required, the technology should contribute to the broad Laboratory mission or to a compelling national need.

Small businesses that want to attend, the conference should contact Carole Travis at (505) 665-6756 to reserve seating. Businesses that are unable to attend but want to receive the request for proposal should contact Jim Jefferis of the Laboratory's Procurement Group at jrjefferis@lanl.gov, or call (505) 667-5331.
