Census Bureau Releases Asian and Pacific Islander
                               Population Report

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau released a report today that brings
together under one cover data on a wide range of topics related to the Asian and
Pacific Islander population.

The report, The Asian and Pacific Islander Population in the United States:
March 1999, is a compilation of data released on the Internet last May. The
estimates are not from Census 2000. The first Census 2000 results will be
released in late December.

Subjects covered in the printed report include geographic distribution, age
distribution, marital status, family type and family size, educational
attainment, labor force participation, unemployment and occupation, family
income and poverty status.

Estimates in the report are based on data collected in the March 1999 Current
Population Survey. As in all surveys, the estimates are subject to sampling and
nonsampling error.
