An Exception is Paradise

Bachelors Outnumbered, Census Bureau Reports

A new analysis of Census 2000 data released today shows that of the more than 221 million people age 15 and over, there were 86 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women.

One exception in this match-up of the sexes is Paradise, Nev., an unincorporated suburb of Las Vegas, which had 118 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women. Other places of 100,000 or more people with above-average ratios were Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Tempe, Ariz.; and Sunnyvale and Santa Ana, Calif.

The report, Marital Status: 2000, a Census 2000 Brief, [PDF] describes marital status distributions by sex in the nation, regions, states, counties and cities with 100,000 or more people. Also included are marital status by age, race and Hispanic origin, and ratios of unmarried men to unmarried women. Historical changes in marital status observed since the 1950 census also are shown.

Information in the report is based on responses from the sample of households that received the Census 2000 long form. The estimates are subject to sampling and nonsampling error.
