One-Third of U.S. Civilian Workers
in Managerial, Professional Jobs

About a third (33.6 percent) of the nation's civilian workers were employed in management, professional and related jobs and 26.7 percent were in sales and office occupations, according to a Census 2000 brief released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The brief, Occupations: 2000 [PDF], analyzes the occupations of the nearly 130 million civilian workers age 16 and older by region, state, county and selected metropolitan areas. The brief also shows occupation data by gender, race, Hispanic origin and industry. Differences in earnings by men and women with similar jobs also are covered.

The data are based on responses from a sample of households that received the census long form, about 1-in-6 nationally, and are subject to sampling and nonsampling error.
