  Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171)

Public Law 94-171, enacted in 1975, directs the Census Bureau to provide redistricting data needed by the 50 states for their use in redrawing districts of the United States Congress and state legislatures.

Data are provided for Puerto Rico because they chose to participate in the Census 2000 Redistricting Data Program.

The Census 2000 Redistricting (Public Law 94-171) Summary File provides population counts for all persons and all person 18 years and over. It also has counts of Hispanic/Latino persons by race (63 categories) and not Hispanic/Latino persons by race (63 categories) for both the total population and the population 18 years and over.

Data are presented for the 50 states and the District of Columbia in a hierarchical sequence down to the block level. Types of geographic entities covered include states, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, block groups, blocks, Congressional districts (106th Congress), American Indian and Alaska Native Areas, and Hawaiian home lands. Data also are provided for voting districts (e.g., election precincts) and state legislative districts where states have identified them for the Census Bureau.

Geographic coverage for Puerto Rico covers the area of the 78 municipios that comprise Puerto Rico. Data are presented in a hierarchical sequence down to the block level: Puerto Rico, municipios, voting districts, barrios, barrios-pueblo, places, census tracts, block groups, and blocks.
