Census Bureau Releases Census 2000 Population
Counts for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

The U.S. Census Bureau today released the official Census 2000
population count for the Commonwealth of 69,221 for the Northern Mariana
Islands.

As part of Census 2000, the Census Bureau worked with the commonwealth
government to collect detailed population and housing data. The count was
provided to Northern Mariana Islands Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands population increased by
25,876 over the previous census in 1990. This represented a 60 percent
increase in 10 years.

The Census Bureau will provide more detailed data for the Commonwealth
of the Northern Mariana Islands in a demographic profile scheduled for
release later this year and in a separate summary file and printed report,
scheduled for release in February 2002 and November 2002, respectively.
